What to Expect at Your First Sedation Gynecology Appointment
One of the biggest sources of medical anxiety is not knowing what's going to happen. If you've booked a sedation gynecology appointment — or you're thinking about it — here's a clear, step-by-step look at what the experience actually involves.
Step 1: The Consultation
Every new patient starts with a consultation, either in-office or via telehealth. This is a conversation, not a procedure. Your Nurse Practitioner will:
- Ask about your health history and what brings you in
- Discuss what procedure you need (Pap smear, IUD insertion, etc.)
- Go over the comfort measures available and help you decide which ones you'd like
- Answer every question you have — there's no rush
By the end of this visit, you'll have a clear plan for your procedure day. You'll know exactly what comfort measures will be set up, what the procedure involves, and what to expect afterward.
If you chose nitrous oxide as part of your plan, you will need to arrange a driver for your appointment. This is required for all patients who receive nitrous oxide.
Step 2: Procedure Day — Arrival
When you arrive for your procedure, you check in and head to the exam room. Your Nurse Practitioner handles your entire visit from start to finish — the same person you spoke with during your consultation. No hand-offs, no strangers.
You won't be rushed. We don't double-book visits, and we schedule extra time so you have space to settle in and ask any last-minute questions.
Step 3: Getting Comfortable
Before the procedure begins, your provider sets up whichever comfort measures you discussed:
If you chose nitrous oxide: You'll put on a small mask that covers your nose. You breathe normally, and within a minute or two you'll start to feel relaxed and slightly floaty. You stay fully conscious and can talk to your provider the entire time.
If you chose TENS therapy: Small electrode pads are placed on your lower abdomen or back. They send gentle buzzing pulses that help block pain signals. It feels like a light vibration.
Heating pads are placed on your abdomen to relax muscles.
Cervical block — if part of your plan — is applied before the procedure begins, numbing the area.
Step 4: The Procedure
Once you're comfortable, the procedure begins. Your provider talks you through each step as it happens. For most procedures — IUD insertion, Pap smears, biopsies — the actual clinical part takes just a few minutes.
You're in control the whole time. If you need to pause, say so. If something feels different than expected, your provider wants to hear about it.
Step 5: Recovery
After the procedure, the nitrous oxide (if you used it) wears off within a few minutes. You'll rest briefly in the exam room. Most patients feel back to normal within 5 to 10 minutes.
Your provider gives you aftercare instructions and lets you know what to expect over the next few days. You'll receive follow-up communication through the patient portal — no chasing down phone calls.
What About Cost?
TENS therapy, heating pads, and cervical blocks are available at no extra charge. Nitrous oxide is $50 per visit to cover the cost of a new single-use mask, which is required by law.
The procedure itself — whether it's an IUD insertion, Pap smear, or something else — is billed to your insurance as it normally would be. IUDs are covered as preventive care under the ACA for most insured patients.
Common Questions
Can I drive home after nitrous oxide? No — all patients who receive nitrous oxide are required to bring a driver. This is a blanket policy for your safety.
Do I have to use all the comfort measures? No. You choose what works for you. Some patients want the full protocol. Others just want heating pads and TENS. It's entirely up to you.
Is this only for IUDs? No. Sedation gynecology is available for Pap smears, biopsies, IUD insertion and removal, and other gynecologic procedures. If a visit makes you anxious, we can make it more comfortable.
What if I have questions after my appointment? Your Nurse Practitioner communicates with you directly through the patient portal. No phone tag with front desk staff.
