What Is Sedation Gynecology? A Guide for Anxious Patients
If the thought of a gynecology appointment makes your stomach drop, you're not alone. Medical anxiety around gynecological procedures is incredibly common — and it's valid. For too long, patients have been told to "just relax" or take an ibuprofen and push through. Sedation gynecology is a different approach.
What Sedation Gynecology Means
Sedation gynecology refers to the use of pain management and sedation techniques during gynecological procedures. The most common form is nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — the same thing dentists have used safely for decades.
Unlike general anesthesia, nitrous oxide doesn't put you to sleep. You're awake, aware, and able to communicate with your provider throughout the procedure. You just feel calmer and experience less pain. It wears off within minutes, and you can drive yourself home.
Why It Matters
Most gynecology practices in the United States still rely on ibuprofen as the primary pain management tool for in-office procedures. For many patients, this isn't enough — and the result is that people delay or avoid care they need.
Research has consistently shown that patients report less pain and anxiety when nitrous oxide is used during IUD insertion and other gynecological procedures. It's safe, effective, and well-tolerated.
What Procedures Benefit from Sedation
Sedation gynecology isn't just for one specific procedure. It can be used during:
- IUD insertion and removal — The most common reason patients seek sedation
- Nexplanon insertion and removal — The birth control arm implant
- Endometrial biopsies — Tissue sampling from the uterine lining
- Colposcopy — Examination of the cervix
- Any procedure that causes you anxiety — The point is to make healthcare accessible to everyone, regardless of their pain tolerance or anxiety level
What We Offer
At Metro Area Advanced Practice Healthcare, our sedation gynecology approach includes four comfort measures available for every procedure:
- Nitrous oxide — Self-administered through a mask you control
- TENS therapy — Gentle electrical pulses that block pain signals
- Heating pads — Muscle relaxation and comfort
- Cervical blocks — Local anesthetic for numbing
TENS therapy, heating pads, and cervical blocks are offered at no extra charge. Nitrous oxide is available for a $50 fee that covers the cost of a new, single-use mask required by law for each patient. We build your comfort plan during your consultation so everything is set up for you on procedure day.
Is Sedation Gynecology Right for You?
If any of these sound familiar, sedation gynecology might be a good fit:
- You've been putting off a gynecology procedure because of anxiety
- A previous IUD insertion or GYN procedure was more painful than expected
- You have a low pain tolerance or high anxiety around medical procedures
- You want to feel calm and comfortable during your visit
The best first step is a consultation — in office or via telehealth — where we can discuss your specific situation and plan your comfort protocol.
