Looking for a Gynecologist in the DC Metro Area? Here's What to Know

March 21, 2026·5 min read

If you're searching for a gynecologist in or near Washington, DC, you know the struggle: long wait times, rushed appointments, and practices that feel more like a factory than a healthcare provider. The DC metro area has hundreds of GYN practices, but finding one that actually fits can feel like a project.

Here's what we think matters — and why patients across DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia choose a small practice in Kensington, MD.

What to Look For in a Gynecologist

The clinical qualifications matter, obviously. But most GYN practices can handle the basics. What separates a good experience from a bad one usually comes down to things that don't show up on a credentials page:

Do they double-book? Many busy practices schedule multiple patients in the same time slot. That's why you wait 45 minutes in a paper gown. Practices that don't double-book can actually give you the time you need.

Who do you see during your visit? At some practices, you see a medical assistant for intake, then a provider for 5 minutes, then you're out. At others, your provider handles the entire visit from start to finish.

How do they handle pain? This matters especially for procedures like IUD insertion or biopsies. If the answer is "take ibuprofen beforehand," they're not keeping up with modern comfort options. Practices that offer nitrous oxide, TENS therapy, and cervical blocks are doing more.

Are they affirming? If you're LGBTQIA+, trans, or non-binary, you shouldn't have to educate your provider. Look for practices that explicitly serve queer and trans patients.

Are they trauma-informed? If you've had bad experiences with medical providers in the past, you need a practice that understands that. Trauma-informed care means explaining everything before it happens, letting you set the pace, and never dismissing your concerns. If a provider tells you to "just relax," that's not it.

Do they follow HAES? Health At Every Size means your weight isn't the focus of your visit. You won't be weighed unless it's medically necessary, and you won't get a lecture about BMI when you came in for a Pap smear. If this matters to you, ask the practice directly — the ones who practice it will say so clearly.

Why Kensington, MD?

If you live in DC, Silver Spring, Bethesda, Takoma Park, or Wheaton, Kensington is probably closer than you think. It's right off Connecticut Avenue, just past Chevy Chase — about 10-15 minutes from downtown DC depending on traffic.

Our office at 3720 Farragut Ave is close to the Forest Glen Metro station and has free parking — which is more than most DC practices can say.

We also serve patients via telehealth across VA, MD, DC, and 9 other states for consultations, follow-ups, and birth control refills.

What's Different About Our Practice

Metro Area Advanced Practice Healthcare is a small, focused gynecology practice run by a Nurse Practitioner. A few things that set us apart:

No double-booking. Your appointment slot is yours. You won't wait an hour to be seen.

One provider for your whole visit. Your NP checks you in, takes your vitals, does your exam, and follows up with results. No hand-offs.

Sedation gynecology. We offer nitrous oxide, TENS therapy, heating pads, and cervical blocks for procedures. Because "just take some ibuprofen" isn't good enough.

Inclusive care. We're a queer and veteran owned practice that specializes in LGBTQIA+ healthcare, including gender affirming HRT and PrEP.

Trauma-informed care. We understand that past experiences shape how you feel about medical visits, and that modern Gynegology can have a power differential. We set the pace together, explain everything before we do it, and respect your boundaries without question.

Health At Every Size (HAES) aligned and size-friendly. We don't weigh you unless it's medically necessary and desired by you, and your weight is never the focus of your visit. You'll receive the same quality of care and respect regardless of body size.
